Life: Gwen Cooper's family has been established in Cardiff since 19th Century, where there is a Rift. This is the explanation for Gwen's strong resemblance to a servant girl called Gwyneth (DW: 'The Unquiet Dead') who died in 1896 - the two of them are not related. The Doctor described this as "spacial genetic multiplicity".
Gwen grew up with her father, Geraint, and mother, Mary, in Swansea. It has been mentioned that Gwen has had a previous relationship with PC Andy Davidson (TW: 'Adrift'), with whom she continued working in the police force afterwards (TW: 'Everything Changes'). This was until the events of 'Everything Changes', when she witnessed Torchwood resurrect a dead man and persisted until she was eventually recruited.
